The Set Decorator’s Dilemma: How to Stay Fresh in a World Full of Trends

While interior decorators craft spaces for longevity and everyday use, we’re creating environments for the fleeting moment. This means our sets are temporary, yet they must convey permanence, personality, and story. That’s the magic—and the pressure.

How do we, as decorators, maintain freshness without falling back on tried-and-true formulas? Here’s a secret: Go deeper than just aesthetics. Every object, from the quirky lamp to the distressed wood table, must serve the narrative. Remember, it’s not about what’s on trend, but what serves the story.

Create a Luxe Plant Holder with DIY Techniques Inspired by Kelly Wearstler

Transform your indoor gardening with a project that brings a touch of luxury to your home décor. Our DIY luxe plant holder tutorial is inspired by the iconic designs of Kelly Wearstler, and it’s a gorgeous way to elevate your living space.

Materials Needed:

  • Air dry clay

  • Decorative stones

  • Copper foil (typically used for stained glass projects)

  • Strong adhesive (avoid hot glue for durability)

  • Mod Podge for sealing

Step-by-Step Guide:

1. Prepare Your Pot

Begin by applying a layer of air dry clay to the surface of a clean, dry pot. Ensure the clay is smooth and evenly distributed around the pot. This will create a perfect canvas for your decorative touches.

2. Decorate with Stones and Copper Foil

Take decorative stones and wrap each one with copper foil. This metallic detail adds a luxurious and custom look reminiscent of high-end design pieces. Arrange the stones artfully around the clay-covered pot.

3. Adhesive Application

For a lasting hold, use a strong adhesive to attach each copper-wrapped stone to the clay surface. Make sure each piece is securely fixed to avoid any future detachment.

4. Seal the Clay

Once your design elements are in place, seal the air dry clay with Mod Podge. This step not only enhances the durability of your plant holder but also gives it a finished, professional look.

Final Touches:

Allow everything to dry completely according to the product instructions before using the pot. This drying stage is crucial for ensuring the adhesive and sealant fully set, providing a strong, long-lasting hold.

Tips for Success:

  • Durability Matters: Opt for a high-quality adhesive suited for ceramic and glass to ensure the longevity of your plant holder.

  • Customization: Feel free to experiment with different stones and patterns for a truly unique piece.

Conclusion:

Creating a luxe plant holder is a rewarding DIY project that adds a stylish flair to any room. Not only will you have a stunning new home for your plants, but you’ll also enjoy the satisfaction of handcrafting a designer-inspired piece.

IT IS TOTALLY beautiful ! so happy !

As an expert in costume design, prop creation, and set design, here’s how you can style an unforgettable Zumba commercial that ranks high on search engines and captivates your audience.

1. Understand the Essence of Zumba

Zumba is all about energy, fun, and movement. Your commercial should reflect this through dynamic visuals and vibrant colors. Think bright, bold, and energetic. Use neon colors, funky patterns, and upbeat music to create an atmosphere that screams excitement and fun.

2. Costume Design: Comfort Meets Style

When designing costumes for a Zumba commercial, prioritize comfort without compromising on style. Opt for breathable fabrics like cotton or moisture-wicking materials. Here are some key costume ideas:

  • Bright Leggings: Opt for leggings in neon colors or with bold patterns.

  • Loose Tanks: Flowy tank tops that allow for free movement are ideal.

  • Accessories: Headbands, wristbands, and colorful sneakers can add an extra pop.

3. Set Design: Create an Inviting Space

Your set design should be inviting and reflect the energetic spirit of Zumba. Here’s how to achieve this:

  • Colorful Backdrops: Use vibrant backdrops with abstract patterns or graffiti art.

  • Lighting: Use dynamic lighting that changes with the beat of the music.

  • Props: Incorporate fun props like disco balls, neon signs, or even Zumba-branded gear.

4. Prop Creation: Engage the Audience

Props can make a big difference in making your commercial memorable. Here are some ideas:

  • Dance Floors: A brightly colored dance floor can make the set more engaging.

  • Fitness Equipment: Use lightweight, colorful equipment that complements the Zumba moves.

  • Interactive Elements: Consider adding elements like confetti cannons or fog machines to add excitement.

DYI Make Your Own Face Mask

About 3 weeks ago I started thinking about how I could design a face shield that would look good and protect my eyes, nose, and mouth from saliva coming from another human. I get the whole social distancing, but in reality people are kinda gross and I don’t really want to look like a medical worker. Plus those surgical masks are meant for them, the medical community, not us.

I googled and came up with nothing that was ship-able or possible to wear. So I started with what resources I had and the idea to make a prototype of a chic face mask.

I went to Jack’s 99 cent store and Burlington and got the thickest clear shower curtain available to start making a prototype https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCF1GpDAtfkEcsHgZi2R91NA see my YouTube Live here I demo it.

Then I realized I needed to upgrade to some thicker vinyl. I went to the plastic supplier in Nyc and got a few yards, Perfection.! The issue now is they are afraid to open and can’t ship it to me so I am struggling with getting more of the vinyl .

So, place you order now - I am transparent with the cost and there is no mark up.

Let me know what you think I have talked to 3 Dr. friends and think this is a good option

If I get more vinyl then I have a force of freelancers ready to go & make this a scale-able idea!

Would you wear a Hot dog colored lipstick for NYFW

2019-02-05_11-59-33.jpg

Finding the perfect color of lipstick can be a super challenging. Sephora, department stores, even drug stores have aisles of lipsticks. I was determined to find a great “every day shade” that looked great on me and was NOT the Kyle lip kit. Yuck not me.

Lip stick is for everyone, it’s that pop on your face that makes people look at your mouth! (hey over here look at these lips)

A few months ago I I was invited by my professional makeup artist friend Jeni to go to the makeup show. We had a blast testing and discovering all kinds of new makeup products.

2019-02-05_11-57-49.jpg

There was one booth that really stood out. Gorjue pronounced |gôrj| ! The founder Maesa Koeber thought up a fantastic way to make her lipsticks stand out! Genius actually! This is a “capsule” collection of Universally correct colors created to look great on all skin tones. Amazing ! But also she took it a step further and also paired it back to food and travel. How could we all not love this new brand!

Seriously, I went Crazy and so did the crowd that was totally in awe of this new concept. Imagine in the design of the lipstick tube is placed a tiny hot dog, chicken leg, hamburger, or sushi - ( think mini emoticon symbol ) SO cute!

The lipsticks come in 5 shades and are formulated to go back to most skin tones.

The lipsticks are also home “cooked” on the east coast of USA and are vegan, cruelty free! Perfect!

I wear the New York City Hot dog it works perfectly with my medium ( Italian Lebanese skin tone).

The display image has Ketchup, Sushi, a Hot Dog cart.

Instantly I was a fan - and so was Jeni!

See the tiny Sushi sealed in the bottom of the tube! Adorable idea for a great Universal Shade of lipstick.

Abandon All hope of Fruition Singer Julie Mintz performs with her neighbor & friend Moby

“Abandon All Hope of Fruition” the saying comes from one of the most powerful teachings of Buddhism and is the title of Julie Mintz’s Album that is produced by her friend and coincidentally neighbor in Cali Moby.

Excitement flurried through the intimate crowd hosted by the Build All Access. Singer-song writer Julie Mintz and Moby are the first ones to participate in this new series. They both spoke candidly about LA, how Moby technically only allows one take when recording, and many other stories making us all feel like friends talking in someone’s living room.

Julie then starts to sing, wearing a long black sheer all over embroidered Badgley Mischka dress. Looking incredible and delicate, just like her voice. She is accompanied by a violinist, piano, and occasionally Moby on guitar spontaneously influencing the play list for the night.

The highlight was when Moby got Julie to sing a perfect cover song for her voice, Kansas “Dust in the Wind”. It was with some coaxing but once she got going it was as if it was written for her to sing.

Closing out the night the crowd even got involved. This time with another cover but one Moby encouraged us to participate singing with him and Julie, it was the trumpet part of Jonny Cashes “Ring of Fire”. and that was that the end!

If you want celebrate Julie and on her Birthday head out February 15th to the Crown Rooftop at Hotel 50 at 50 Bowery from 7pm-10pm

Elsa Schiaparelli lives on for Fashion Week

Bertrand Guyon with Me and Vanessa Sterbenz Sr. Stylist at Bergdorf Goodman

Bertrand Guyon with Me and Vanessa Sterbenz Sr. Stylist at Bergdorf Goodman

The History and creativity of Elsa Schiaparelli lives on again!

For those who need a little fashion history let me give you a the man points.

  • Elsa Shiaparelli is a legendary Italian-born fashion designer who created a fashion house in Paris.

  • It was her Surrealist and Whimsy fashions that made her become the ( INSTAWORTHY ATTENTION GET-ER) for fashion.

  • She collaborated with some of the most important and creative artists of their time

Ex: Salvador Dalí and Jean Cocteauin.

Bertrand Guyon is the one steering the creative direction for the new rebirth of the Schiaparelli collection. Showing at Paris Couture Fashion week at the Opera Garnier in Paris.

The updated collection are on point for this fashion house. Sculptural dresses, and bright ornate embellishments the high light the dresses. Each look is truly a piece of art.

Materials like ostrich feathers, flowers, embroidery, and sequins show case the handwork and labor of the art of Couture.

As research for this collection, it is said that Bertrand Guyon re imagined different color combinations and was inspired by the porcelain of Sevrés, Chantilly and Meissen for the floral section.

The collection I reviewed back at Bergdorf Goodman ( the only place to see it in NYC) carried the updated collection inspired by Man Ray. The prints were a complex interpretation of creativity and modernity. Man Rays famous work of Glass Tears photography was printed on a T’s and then embellished with three-dimensional glass teardrops.

The collection this season is for the collector. You feel as if you are purchasing a piece of art work that has the history behind it and the fun of being able to show it off when you wear it.

These clothes are one of a kind and all the sensibility that Elsa would appreciate with her name being carried on.
