Kicking off fashion week, Skewville launched a limited edition press of their wooden sneakers. Cooler than cool and collector friendly this is like having a piece of heritage original street art.
A week before a select few of us got a sneak peek at the new ( Soho house ) Dumbo House, in Dumbo. Skewville, interviewed by Martin Klipp of Beyond Art Creative got into the story of the wooden sneakers. It was very informative to hear Skewville speak to the history of how it all started to where they are now- this is what hooked me. These guys are the real deal. They grew up in NYC and have a true and unique perspective on street art and how it has changed over the past 20 years. The explosion of social media and how it has helped and maybe caused some street artist to almost sell out was another topic commented on. No matter what your take is, following them online does give you axis to search out some of the random and fun another one off's that are made. I like the impromptu light pole milk crate B-ball piece made for Just the Fun of it! Who does this? These guys do!
Some Fun Facts you may know or not...
Skewville started essentially in 1999 when the twin brothers, Droo and Ad Deville, decided to start tagging and making street art for the sake of art! With the creation of a Supersized snowman, one holiday season spun into 5,000 pairs of wooden sneakers and a "toss" that took them on a global tour.
The trip is recorded in a book - taking the project global! London, Seattle, New York, Mexico, Norway, Amsterdam, South Africa, they tossed!
Back to Septemeber 5th, and the store take over of Rime. That night they launched a limited numbered collection of Tiffany blue or pink wooden sneakers. They came with a poster and a keepsake sack. In the back of the store, they added a printing press where you could watch you Fresh tasty How to Toss poster be printed. Skewville was on site signing and licking in my case this yummy tar paper collecter piece. This gives new meaning to putting your blood, sweat, and tears into your art. Love it
If you are interested in owning your own set of wooden sneakers I would contact Skewville.
Happy Fashion week everyone - Mine is kicking!
