The love of the 70’s continues with the exhibit of Richard Bernstein’s works. Illustrating 189 covers for Warhol’s Interview magazine, these works were salvaged from his apartment in the iconic Chelsea Hotel.
Jeffrey Ditch show cased them for the first time in October, “You look at Bernstein’s images and you see that these are images that define a time.”
True to that. The stylized images and use of multi media materials on some is amazing. It documents a time when there was no Photoshop to work on your art and push it or layer it. These are real pieces of craft. I enjoyed seeing the layers and mark making. His use of pencil, colored pencil, gauche and other materials is fascinating. The rendering and illustration techniques are true talent.
His first cover and one of Jeffrey Deitch’s favorites is of Marisa Berenson in 1976.
Other celebrities are Shelly Duvall, VItas Gurlatis, Peter Beard, Isabella Rosselli, Steve Rubell, Mariel Hemingway, Liza, Debbie Harry, Brooke Shields, Madonna - there were many.
